First episode now available on Crunchyroll: LINK

Episode 1

It's great to see one of the best shows from my early days of anime fandom being brought into modern times.  While it is in CG, Orange is one of the best in the business in using CGI.  It begins with how Vash and Knives ended up on this desert planet, which is something that doesn't happen until midway through the original series and it's thanks to Rem's sacrifice that those two were able to escape the exploding ship.  And much like with the original series, it starts with Meryl (without Milly this time) starting out as a freshly-recruited reporter who ends up meeting Vash who wasn't looking too hot.  And then Vash faces off against an enemy who will stoop so low as to killing everybody in the village in order to claim the bounty placed on the head of the Humanoid Typhoon.  But in typical Vash style, he saves the day with just one bullet.

That was a great start here, and this is what CG was designed to do as it works very well for action.  Looking forward to seeing more of this as unlike with the original series that spends quite a lot of time with the monster-of-the-week formula, Knives is set up from the start as the one who will push Vash's pacifistic ideals to the limit.  The comedy in the original series was over-the-top at times, especially at the beginning, but here it's mostly serious stuff as there are no donuts or the black cat.

Do you need to watch the original Trigun and its sequel to understand or enjoy this Stampede version ? Or going in without any knowledge is doable ?

This looks to be a reboot so I would say going in cold might be better as you won't have "nostalgic expectations" to impede your enjoyment of the series.

I really enjoyed the first episode. They've made some changes to the characters, but nothing I find particularly problematic. The important part is they've maintained the tone of the series with the "new" Vash feeling very much like the "old" Vash.

I'm getting some strong "Disney" vibes off the character designs. I can't put my finger on exactly why, it's just a sense.

The animation is incredible. This may end up equal to Land of the Lustrous in use of 3D-to-2D animation.

That police guy was a real jerk putting the entire damn town at risk.  And based on what was shown at the end, it sounds like the exploding ship at the beginning was no accident.

In the time it took for the cluster bombs to fall, Vash (along with everybody else) could have just slowly walked out of the area...

Have to agree they pushed that scene to the point it lost any sense of tension. Still humorous though which perhaps was the intent.

Pretty impressive impact on that rock from a rimfire. But that's just me kvetching. I was prepared to hate it, and I still don't like A) the new glasses and B) ditzier Meryl - but those are small things. Overall, I was wayyy more impressed than I expected to be.

Doesn't really matter. I guess since you're new to it, maybe watch the original after this one ends. The original is a huge classic and it's worth a watch even though it wasn't a faithful adaptation of the original manga. Plus it was done by Madhouse when they were at their peak in the Maruyama era.

Gotta say that was some very impressive CGI. Might even become Studio Orange's magnum opus.

I'm not familiar with the original anime or the manga, but I thought that was a pretty good start. The scene with the falling bombs was a little bit weird at first but then they dragged it out for so long it started to work as a joke. I also still think the color of the coat is too pink (not sure why it bothers me but it does) but other than that the first episode was great.

I think it might be a function of the way they are doing lighting and shadows in the CGI.  The lighted portions are made to look pink

Nice episode. I've not watched the original, so I'm coming in cold, and it definitely held my attention. Some worldbuilding sprinkled in with the action.

They just keep getting better and better. Still hoping for a second season of Land of the Lustrous, but the manga's just now resuming after a lengthy hiatus, so it will probably be a while before that returns.

I thought I posted my thoughts here, but it turns out I was discussing this with an Ex-CRer.  Here s what I wrote.

Watched it: Minor quibbles (Not fond of the art style, I prefer Meryl being an insurance agent than her new job, too much about Vash and his background too soon), but all that said; I really enjoyed it.

It was pretty good first eps as fan of the original I have a few minor quibbles but nothing to make me stop watching it

Loving the western style soundtrack!

I hope Milly show up at some point.. I always thought she was the heart of the original

and Robert totally going to betray them all at some point.

I think they recast/reimagined Milly's role as Roberto. I've not seen the original, but that's what I've read.

Milly was what made the show fun.  I think it was the people who were all-serious; all the time about anime, who didn't like her.

I barely recall the character beyond her being a big-busted ditz. I didn't dislike her, she just was kinda there and not very memorable. The relationship between Vash, Meryl, and Wolfwood are the ones I enjoyed most. (Though I do hope Milly shows up. Roberto is a bit too grizzled as a regular.)

She wasn't big busted she was just a big girl. (For Japan anyway at 5'11). It kind of seems like they're making Meryl more of a ditz in this to make up for the lack of Milly.

I always knew JYB would return seeing that this is his first anime voiceover role and it's one that's very near and dear to him.  The only other reprisal I can see happening is Luci Christian as Meryl as she voiced her in the Badlands Rumble movie, and Bryce Papenbrook as young Vash.  All the other characters are either new or voiced by somebody who has long been retired from the business.

Episode 2

And with that, Vash, Meryl, and Roberto have formed a party, but now they are being hunted seeing that $$6 million is no small chunk of change (albeit nothing compared to the $$60 billion in the original series).  In this episode, the bad guys after Vash's bounty are Gofsef and his creator Dr. Nebraska, who appeared in episode 5 of the original series, but with the fight happening at Jeneora Rock.  Those two are after the reactor plant that would make the place uninhabitable, but Vash saved the day, and doing so while saving Gofsef from falling.  But despite Vash's efforts, Gofsef bit the dust anyway because of those Lost Technology bugs that came to execute him.  Good to see some more familiar faces emerging as I remember that fight against Gofsef quite well.  I get the sense that Knives is watching Vash's every move and is controlling those Lost Technology thingies in a way.

After he saved the town from the police guy's cluster bomb, the townspeople try to collect on Vash's bounty.  But the Nebraskas try to steal the bounty for themselves, as well as the one working Plant in the town.  Just as things seem to have been resolved with no casualties, in come those bacteriophage bombs that blow Gofsef up.  If Knives did send those bombs, then he missed an opportunity to cause a lot more damage by blowing up the entire saloon and everyone in it instead of focusing on just the one guy.  Of course, perhaps that actually would have happened if Gofsef didn't run out of the saloon before the bombs detonated.

It's saying something that I actually cared about what happened to Gofsef after less than 1 episode...

Every time they reference Knives Millions, I think of the character from Scott Pilgrim.

Episode 3

As it turns out, the bombs were the work of E.G. the Mine, who is one of the Gung-ho Guns who works under Knives' right-hand man Legato.  For those who watched the original series, this is the guy who pushed Vash's pacifistic ways to the limit more than any character in this show.  While Vash made quick work of EG and disarmed the bombs, that's just the first shot of a much bigger threat as Knives shows up to steal the plant he sent EG to steal.  I remember just how evil Knives is and he puts that on full display in destroying the town, not that the place would have been inhabitable with the plant removed.

Dropped. None of the charm and humour of the original. CGI is better than some shows and the VAs are superb, but none of this makes it worth to keep in the queue.

Man, that was a real sadistic show of force, as Knives went practically overkill, not allowing any survivors even the slightest glimmer of hope.  The music in this episode really captured the sense of dread surrounding Knives.

That was a lot of villain introductions to stuff into a single episode. Bomb guy was basically an afterthought.

I'm not yet convinced we needed a grimdark Trigun. Vash also feels like a weaker character here.

I mean this town was saved in Trigun. They just nixed 2 episodes by leveling the town and cutting the arc short.

I hope they just don't destroy every city he arrives in and turn this into misery porn.

Well that got real dark real fast. Oof.

The technical aspects are gorgeous, but I'm having a hard time understanding or caring without some more worldbuilding.

Also, if ep.3 is a direct continuation from ep.2, I thought they had just saved the healthy plant from Gofsef and Nebraska, but all of sudden it's back in the silo thing for EG Mine to steal?

There were two plants. The plant still in the silo was the dying one.

I have mixed feelings so far. Knives certainly is a lot more menacing than he was in the original, and the animation for his blades was very nice, but I miss the philosophical debate about pacifism, and I'm not fond of replacing Milly with the new guy. It does have plenty to keep me watching.

Yes, the dying one stayed in the silo, but Nebraska and Gofsef were in the process of stealing the healthy one and were just stopped at the end of the last episode. How did they have time to return the healthy plant to the silo for EG Mine to find it there?

Speaking of the plants, that's a good example of some worldbuilding I'd like. How do they sustain the village? Do they clean the water? Create water?

I'm still not sure of Meryl & Roberto's motivations at this point. They're supposed to be reporters and they want to help Vash....why again?

Episode 4

Here comes Wolfwood, and the way Vash met the priest gunman is pretty much the same as I remember in the original series.  So after meeting Wolfwood and helping a hungry kid out, Vash and company are swallowed by a giant sand worm.  But it turns out that this kid is Zazie the Beast, one of the Gung-ho Guns, and he's the one controlling the worms, as well as those bugs that are swarming around.  In the end, Wolfwood saved the day, but that was just an act as Wolfwood and Zazie are working in cahoots.  Wolfwood is just as I remember, except that in this series he's aligned with the enemy and looking to gain Vash's trust to further their agenda.

Man, this episode felt like it would fit perfectly in Dune.  Wolfwood has connections to Knives and his group, but I am a little uncomfortable in how they chose to portray that fact, like he's some sort of sleeper agent.

Episode 5

Next stop is an abandoned town that became uninhabitable thanks to the wind not blowing causing the windmills that power the town to stop running.  There, he meets a familiar face in Rollo, who was a sick boy when he first met, and thanks to some diabolical experiments by a mad doctor posing as a priest, was turned into that hulking monster.  As much as Vash tried to reach out to him, there was just no saving him.  So Wolfwood puts him out of his misery.  This episode goes to show that there are just so many cracks in Vash's character, and while Wolfwood is working for the enemy, he's none too pleased that Vash's softness is overriding reason.
